DEI is a core value we live out with intention.

BGE is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and our reliability, safety, and customer satisfaction performance shows that we are a stronger company for it. We have always worked to serve our customers and support our community, but we know that our DEI journey is far from over.

There is much work to be done to ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are woven into everything we do.

We will continuously improve how DEI guides how we serve our customers, communities, and employees. We share these values with our parent company, Exelon, and by working together we strive to positively impact our stakeholders through purposeful diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Our Employees – safe, valued, and respected in the workplace
Our goal is to ensure BGE’s workplace environment is welcoming and allows everyone to bring their full self to work. Guidelines and leadership expectations won’t create this culture – our employees are responsible for developing and nurturing this inclusive culture. Employee resource groups, DEI trainings, the company’s D&I Week, and an openness to respectful curiosity provide a foundation for the culture to grow, and our people own it and make it happen.
Workforce diversity initiatives
- D&I Council raises awareness among employees about diversity and inclusion topics and trends. Through events like BGE's annual D&I Week, D&I Council provides employees with a forum to engage in dialogue, learn from each other, and hear from outside experts.
- Racially Inclusive, Safe, and Equitable (RISE) team is charged with developing a 2-year plan to drive positive, sustainable change at BGE and in the communities we serve.
- Equal by 30 Campaign, which Exelon joined, is a public and private sector commitment to work toward equal pay, equal leadership, and equal opportunities for women in the energy sector by 2030.
Employee Resource Groups
BGE employees are encouraged to join the Baltimore chapters of Exelon's employee resource groups.
Diversifying our talent pipeline to reflect the communities we serve
Our Smart Energy Workforce Development program helps students and community members earn jobs in the energy industry – with BGE and our contractor companies. This joint effort brings BGE together with local workforce development organizations and career technology education (CTE) high schools to help people develop the necessary skills so they can compete for job opportunities and lifelong careers.
Smart Energy Workforce Development initiatives
- Smart Energy Internship
  Hands-on experience for high-achiever high school students from partner CTE high schools.
- CAST test preparation
  Partnership with the South Baltimore Learning Center and CTEs to offer a free Construction and Skilled Trades (CAST) test prep course. Passing this test is required to work in many construction industries.
- Youth Energy Days
  Networking and learning events for high school students interested in a career in the utility industry.
- Workforce Collaborative
  Partnership with Civic Works to provide utility construction and job readiness training for adults who are underemployed or unemployed.
Growing supplier diversity

As our business grows, we’re committed to ensuring that our supplier diversity grows along with us. BGE's supplier diversity spending was $2.2 billion from 2009-2019, and during that time our annual supplier diversity spending increased more than 500 percent. In 2020 our supplier diversity spending was $464 million, representing 44 percent of the goods and services we purchased.
Focus Forward
Our Focus Forward Supplier Diversity Academy provides training, education, and networking for diverse businesses to help them grow by learning how to compete for contracts offered by large organizations in the public and private sector. More than 50 minority, women, and veteran-owned companies, many located in BGE’s central Maryland service area, have graduated from this annual program since 2013.
BLocal
We are among the leading local organizations that partnered to launch BLocal, an initiative to improve Baltimore City's economic prospects through focused spending and hiring practices. In 2019, BGE exceeded its BLocal commitments by spending more than $25 million with local businesses.
Lifting up our communities
Grant programs
- Bright Ideas Teachers Grants help educators purchase supplies for STEM and technology student projects.
- Green Grants for organizations committed to environmental stewardship in central Maryland.
- Emergency Response and Safety Grants support emergency preparedness and response efforts in our communities.
Access to higher education
- Community college vocational programs
  BGE provides financial support for vocational programs at all the community colleges in the company's service area. At least one BGE employee serves on each community college's board of directors.
- CollegeBound Foundation scholarships
  BGE is among the companies and organizations that provide financial support for the CollegeBound Foundation's Urban Scholars Program, which offers college scholarships to Baltimore City Public High School seniors from underrepresented communities. In addition, the Last Dollar Grant program supports current college students with additional funding assistance.
- Johns Hopkins Carey Business School endowed scholarship
  An endowed scholarship fund established by BGE provides need-based financial aid for students enrolled in the Carey School's MBA program.
- Featherstone Foundation scholarships
  BGE supports the Featherstone Foundation's economic empowerment initiatives that create sustainable solutions to bridge the opportunity divide among immigrants and underserved communities. With financial support from BGE, State Farm, and Wells Fargo, the foundation awards merit-based scholarships to exceptional students who are first-generation college students and traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
Strengthening STEM education
BGE and its parent company, Exelon, are committed to expanding and strengthening the STEM career pipeline.
- STEM Leadership Academy
  BGE helps recruit high school students from central Maryland to participate in the Exelon Foundation's STEM Innovation Leadership Academy, designed for young women interested in STEM and energy. BGE employees speak to and network with the students during the program's week of educational activities each summer.
- Energizing Student Potential
  This new program gives middle school teachers in central Maryland access to STEM resources geared toward inspiring students to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
