Captain Mercaptan Action Day 2015 Comic book characters: “Sniff, I smell it too! Sniff, sniff. Rotten eggs!” Captain Mercaptan: “When we're safe from a natural gas leak, my hair is blue. But when I smell mercaptan my hair turns yellow. Leave now!” Iron Man: “You heard Captain Mercaptan. Evacuate the hall!” Ruth Heltne (VP, Health Living & Strategic Partnerships, The Y in Central Maryland): “The Captain Mercaptan, a Marvel comic book, is just terrific. It's a fun way for kids to learn about safety.” Alex Núñez (VP, Government & External Affairs, BGE): “They get to learn about Captain Mercaptan, his adventures with Iron Man, and in reading about those adventures they're going to learn some valuable lessons about being safe around natural gas. Christine McMullen (VP, Gas Distribution, BGE): “They thought it was a great way for us to introduce the comic book by reaching out to the Y and rolling it out this summer to the students that are participating in their summer camps.” Lana Smith (VP, Youth & Family Experience, The Y in Central Maryland): “We have a spirit day every week with our campers and we have made Captain Mercaptan Action Day that spirit day today.” BGE Employee: “Captain Mercaptan takes his name from mercaptan. Natural gas does not have a smell. We add a sulfur-based product to it to make it smell so you can identify it.” Lana Smith: “While we're teaching them and reading the comic story to them, we designed a couple of other activities that get them up and moving. They get a chance to smell the mercaptan and then that teaches them that this is smell, this rotten egg smell, is something that's not good and might pose a potential threat to them.” Seth Merrick (Camp Counselor, The Y in Central Maryland):“We have a moon bounce, we have comic books for the kids to read, we have some coloring books for them to color in and fill out, and it's a lot of information about Captain Mercaptan, BGE and natural gas.” Frederick Zuckerman (Third Grade): “It’s got a lot of fun quizzes in here and um, mazes and word search and coloring.” Dillon Din (First Grade): “Captain Mercaptan, when his hair turns yellow that means there’s danger. I love Captain Mercaptan.” Bella Pierce (Third Grade): “If you detect natural gas, you should go outside and find a safe space and call BGE.” Alex Núñez: “We have an established partnership with the Y in Central Maryland. They wanted their kids to be safe and understand how to be around natural gas safely—the same mission that we have here with Captain Mercaptan—so it was a natural partnership from the people.” Ruth Heltne: “And we are very pleased and proud that BGE thought of the Y in Central Maryland as a partner to introduce Captain Mercaptan.” John K. Hoey (President & CEO, The Y in Central Maryland): “Our friends at BGE are funding tonight's event. They've created this Captain Mercaptan. Throughout the day at our camps over 2,000 kids today have been having some fun.” Christine McMullen: “This fall the comic book is going to be rolled out and given to all students in central Maryland in third through fifth grade. And that's about 210,000 students that we're going to be able to reach with this program.” David Marks (Baltimore County Councilman): “So have fun tonight, educate your kids. Hope everyone has great time and thank you to BGE and the Y for sponsoring this event.” Kids: “CAPTAIN MERCAPTAN!” Kids: “CAPTAIN MERCAPTAN!” Kids: “CAPTAIN MERCAPTAN!”
