Our Path to Clean


BGE is leading Maryland to a clean and sustainable future. This is the right thing to do to help limit extreme weather and climate change. We are also building on our history of environmental commitments by creating a cleaner, smarter and more reliable energy system that reduces emissions and helps maintain a strong foundation of safe, reliable, and affordable energy for all of our customers in central Maryland.

Our Commitment

BGE is committed to seeing this Path to Clean through on behalf of our customers and community because we are part of it – we live here, work here, and have deep roots in Maryland. We will:

Cut our own operational emissions by at least 50% by 2030

We will achieve net-zero operations-driven emissions by 2050

while continuing to support our customers in reaching their clean energy goals without sacrificing reliable, safe and affordable energy solutions.

Our Roadmap 

BGE will pursue the Path to Clean by supporting our customers and communities with personalized energy solutions that help them reduce emissions. We will also empower our employees to develop new programs, pursue innovative technologies, and support the development of thoughtful clean energy policies.


The Path to Clean focuses on three impact areas

COMPANY OPERATIONS
Initiatives to reduce BGE’s emissions include: 
  • Further modernizing and enhancing both our electric and natural gas systems 
  • Replacing aging gas infrastructure, particularly in urban areas that are disproportionately impacted by heat, poor air quality and other effects of climate change
  • Reducing energy use in our offices and buildings 
  • Increasing our use of renewable-powered energy 
  • Electrifying 50% of our company’s electric vehicle fleet by 2030 Learn more details here

EMPOWERING CUSTOMERS

We have successfully helped our customers increase their overall energy efficiency through BGE's Smart Energy Savers Program®, reducing emissions and saving them money. Since the program's start in 2008, the results are remarkable:

  • Residential customers have saved 5.7 billion+ kilowatt hours of electricity
  • Customers have received $650 million in rebates and $337 million in bill credits 
  • Business customers have saved 1.6 billion+ kilowatt hours of electricity and $2 billion+ in lifecycle energy costs

COMMUNITY SUPPORT 

BGE partners with our communities to help them meet their sustainability and environmental justice goals in a variety of ways, including:

  • Consulting with them on BGE's EVsmart electric vehicle charger placement in underserved neighborhoods
  • Sponsoring a unique rideshare program with Lyft to introduce electric vehicles into the Baltimore-Washington area to improve air quality and reduce noise pollution in urban communities 
  • Creating workforce development programs and supporting non-profit organizations through jobs training courses and grants that focus on reducing emissions, fighting climate change, and mitigating severe weather
